Hextris Unblocked

by Logan Engstrom, Garrett Finucane, Noah Moroze and Michael Yang

Take the falling-block idea from Tetris, wrap it around a spinning hexagon, and you get Hextris unblocked, a puzzle game that is easy to learn and tough to master. Blocks slide in from every direction while you rotate the center to catch them. The game loads directly from Classroom 7x, so you can start chasing a new high score right away.

About Hextris

Created in 2014 by Logan Engstrom, Garrett Finucane, Noah Moroze and Michael Yang, Hextris is an open-source puzzle game with a simple but tricky setup. A hexagon sits in the middle of the screen while colored blocks slide toward it from all six sides. You cannot move the blocks themselves. Instead, you rotate the hexagon so each block lands on the side you want. When three or more blocks of the same color touch, they disappear and you earn points.

The pressure builds steadily because the speed increases the longer you survive. If any stack grows past the outer gray hexagon, the run is over. Clearing groups in quick succession starts a combo, and matching again before the combo timer runs out awards bonus points, so skilled players think a few moves ahead. Your best scores are saved in your browser, which makes it easy to track your progress over time. On a touchscreen, tapping the left or right half of the screen rotates the hexagon.

How to Play Hextris

  1. Watch the colored blocks moving toward the central hexagon from all six directions.
  2. Press the left or right arrow key, or A and D, to rotate the hexagon and line up where blocks will land.
  3. Group three or more blocks of the same color so they touch and clear from the board.
  4. Chain clears together quickly to build combos and earn bonus points before the combo timer runs out.
  5. Keep every stack inside the outer gray hexagon, because letting one overflow ends the game.

Tips and Tricks

  • Look at the next few incoming blocks, not just the closest one. Planning two or three rotations ahead makes color matches much easier to set up.
  • Keep stacks low and even across all six sides. One tall column is the quickest way to cross the gray border and lose.
  • Try to clear groups back to back. A running combo adds bonus points, and matching again before the combo timer empties keeps it going.
  • Press P to pause when you need a breather, especially late in a run when the falling speed really ramps up.
  • Avoid dropping a block onto a side with no matching colors unless you have no choice, since isolated blocks are hard to clear later.

Hextris FAQ

How is Hextris different from Tetris?

Instead of dropping shapes into a rectangular well, you rotate a central hexagon while single blocks fall toward it from six sides. Completing lines does not matter here. You clear blocks by grouping three or more of the same color.

When does the game end?

A run ends when blocks stack up past the outer gray hexagon on any side. Because the falling speed increases over time, keeping your stacks short and clearing matches quickly is the key to surviving longer.

Are high scores saved?

Yes. Your best scores are stored in your browser, so they are still there when you come back on the same device and browser. Clearing your browser data will usually reset them, so keep that in mind.

Can I play Hextris on a school Chromebook?

Yes. Hextris runs in the Chrome browser, so it works on Chromebooks, Windows PCs and Macs, and it also supports touch screens on tablets and phones. Nothing needs to be installed.

Is Hextris free to play?

Yes, Hextris is completely free on Classroom 7x. There is no download, no account and no sign-up. Press Play and the game loads right on this page.
